Classic Car Body Repair & FABRICATION

Classic Car Body Work 101

Repairing the body of a classic car requires experience, in-depth knowledge, and a diverse skill set. No two classic cars are alike, which is why our team at Precision Car Restoration approaches each project on its own terms.

We work closely with our clients to ensure our process matches your vision. Body work in particular is crucial to the quality of a classic car restoration. Not only does it have a big impact on vehicle appearance, but timely body repairs may also preserve the functionality of a classic car. (You certainly don’t want to ignore signs of rust on steel body panels!)

In addition, body work and body repairs are important prerequisites for a custom paint job. That’s why we take extra care to remove a vehicle’s old paint during our body-repair process and to poly prime bare steel on the body to protect the vehicle. We understand how important effective body work is to carrying out a paint job, which is why our team focuses on getting the details right every time we conduct body repairs.

When you partner with us, we’ll make it a point to communicate with you throughout the process. We’ll always be upfront and transparent, and we’ll provide you with updates on a regular basis. And of course, we only use the highest quality tools and most effective methods to get the job done. Our unique quality-assurance approach enables us to meet your expectations in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Don’t just take our word for it, though. Have a detailed look at our body restoration process here:

  • We disassemble the vehicle, inspect the parts, and store them safely.
  • We inspect the vehicle frame to determine the extent of repair required for proper body panel fit.
  • We carefully remove the vehicle’s paint and old body work manually or with our in-house media blaster to avoid causing any damage during this process.
  • We poly epoxy prime the vehicle to protect the bare steel.
  • We repair any rust found and dents are removed from the body.
  • We repair and/or replace floors as needed.
  • We prime and finish the entire body.
  • We test fit and adjust all panels.
  • Our team inspects the vehicle carefully before sending it to our custom paint experts.

Whether your vehicle has recently sustained collision damage from an accident or decades of wear and tear are beginning to take their toll on its appearance, we’re happy to talk to you about your next classic car restoration project. We work directly with your insurance adjuster to keep your experience as stress-free as possible.

FAQs

What does “body work” mean in a restoration?

Body work covers repairing or replacing damaged metal, correcting panel fit, and addressing dents, rust, and structural issues. It sets the foundation for paint so the car looks straight and correct.

Why can’t you just paint over imperfections?

Paint will highlight flaws, not hide them, especially on classic cars with large flat panels. Proper prep and straight bodywork are what make paint look clean and show-quality.

Can you fabricate metal if panels are not available?

When off-the-shelf panels do not fit or are not available, custom metal fabrication is often the right solution. That helps preserve the car’s lines and maintain a more authentic finish.

How do you handle rusted areas during body work?

The right approach is to remove rust and restore the affected section instead of covering it up. That prevents the problem from returning under the paint and spreading.

How do you make sure panel gaps and alignment look right?

Quality body work includes test fitting and refinement so doors, hoods, and trim sit correctly. Clean alignment is one of the biggest tells of a professional restoration.
